The pinup is an original American art form.  Though the pinup hasn't always had the same respect as other American art forms.  Pinup girls were immortalized as nose art in WWII.  Pin-ups were not exactly approved by the military, but given the sacrifice of the enlisted men, they tended to look the other way.  The images were often copies of the masters of the art form, such as Alberto Vargas.  Pin-up posters were often kept in foot lockers as well.

The key to the pin-up girl art form lies in it what is not there.  A great pin-up triggers the imagination.  Clothing is suggestive, with minimal detail that might detract from the overall impression left on the imagination by the pin-up girl.
